Kittredge "Kit" McDeere, a caregiver who takes a job for the reclusive, paralysis-stricken Lenora Hope in her crumbling mansion. Lenora, the sole survivor of a 1929 family massacre and accused murderer, communicates her story to Kit via a typewriter, gradually revealing the truth behind the murders and a subsequent mystery involving the missing previous nurse, with revelations about the characters' true identities and a collapsing cliffside mansion.
