Set during the Spanish Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American university instructor who joins the International Brigades to fight against Francisco Franco’s fascist forces. Assigned to a dangerous mission behind enemy lines, Jordan is tasked with blowing up a strategically vital bridge to prevent enemy reinforcements. While hiding in the Guadarrama mountains with a local anti-fascist guerrilla unit, he falls deeply in love with Maria, a young Spanish woman traumatized by the war. Over the course of just three days, Jordan confronts the realities of duty, sacrifice, camaraderie, and mortality as the fateful operation approaches.
